Exceptional Cased Exhibition Quality Relief Panel Scene Engraved John S. Roberts English Percussion Revolver

Offered here is a gas sealed single action, six shot revolver. The barrel is signed "JOHN S. ROBERTS" and features engraved scrollwork at the muzzle and on the sides of the lug. The frame, fluted cylinder and grip cap feature full coverage scroll engraving. The frame has an engraved oval panel tiger scene on the left side and a mythical winged creature amongst the scrollwork on the right side. The scrollwork extends to the dolphin hammer. Each cylinder chamber is numbered and has either a "crown/V" or "crown/GP" proof. These London proofs are repeated on the underside of the barrel. The barrel is equipped with fixed sights. The grip cap has a compartment. The barrel has a high polish blue finish, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The near full checkered grip features a carved shell pattern at the frame juncture and a blank silver oval thumb escutcheon. The brass mounted partitioned case is lined in navy blue baize and contains a James Dixon & Sons powder flask, combination tool, bone container, oiler, wooden percussion cap container with caps, bore rod and lead rounds. John S. Roberts was likely a retailer.

ConditionExcellent. The barrel retains 97% bright original high polish blue finish with high edge wear on the balance. The remaining surfaces retain most of the bright original case colors, which are muted by the extensive excellent coverage of the embellishment. The grip is also excellent with most of the checkering remaining crisp. Mechanically fine. The case is fine showing minor handling/storage marks and a loose partitioned wall on the otherwise very fine original lining. The accessories are all excellent overall. An impressive work of exhibition quality engraving on a revolver that will be a welcome addition to even the most advanced antique arms collection.
