Description:

Friedreich Christian Anschütz (1790-1832) was a gunmaker in Suhl, and his business appears to have remained in operation under his son until around 1860. The pistols are signed "-MANUFRE=DE F. C. ANSCHUTZ. A SUHL.-" in gold inlay on top of the barrels and "MANUFRE: DE F.C. ANSCHUTZ./A SUHL." on the locks. They feature fine micro-groove rifling, silver bands at the muzzles and breeches, silver blade front sights, adjustable notch rear sights, elaborate traditional scroll engraving and borders on the lock and nickel-silver furniture, single set triggers, spurred trigger guards, and full length stocks with horn caps, carved floral patterns and borders, and pin accented checkering. The pair comes in a hardwood case closely fitted to the guns and an array of loading and maintenance equipment and three keys.

Rating Definition:

Fine with bright gold inlay, traces of original brown finish blended with smooth brown patina along the barrel, light aged patina on the silver bands, minor pitting concentrated at the breech, bright lock and furniture, and crisp markings and engraving. The refinished stock is also fine with partially smoothed checkering, crack and repairs in the breech section, small flake at the trigger guard finial, and attractive figure and carving. Mechanically fine.

Rating Definition:

Fine with bright gold inlay, light original brown finish mixed in with a smooth brown patina along the barrel, repaired hammer spur, light aged patina on the silver bands, minor pitting concentrated at the breech, bright lock and furniture, and crisp markings and engraving. The refinished stock is also fine with attractive carving and finish, partially smoothed checkering, minor tension crack at the rear lock screw, some chipping on the butt, and light scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically fine. The powder horn is good with some cracking and separation at the mouth, and the case and other accessories are very good and have mild storage wear, including scratches on the exterior and a 3 inch crack on the back left corner of the lid by the metal corner and some stains and contact wear on the lining. This is a very attractive set of 19th century German target pistols exhibiting fine craftsman ship in many areas of gunmaking, including rifling, inlays, engraving, and carving.
