Panel Scene Engraved Gold Banded, Early English Double Rifle by E.E. Henniker of Chatham

This early 20-22 bore percussion double rifle has the flat hammers and replaceable striker faces found on early percussion arms in the 1820s such as pellet and tubelock guns. (The brass threaded inserts are stationary and makes one wonder how this weapon would actually fire!) The locks are signed "E.E. HENNIKER," and the barrel rib is signed "E.E. HENNIKER CHATHAM." Edward E. Henniker of Chatham is believed to have been active staring in the 1830s and was still active at least as late as 1855. In November 1853, he was also working with fireworks and had an explosion at his shop at Hammond Place which killed his wife and severely injured his sons that was widely reported in the press. It is equipped with a bead style blade front sight and a notch rear sight with two folding leaves. The breech end has two gold bands, and the breeches have platinum plugs. The bores have four groove rifling with wide lands. The barrels have London proof and view marks. The locks are engraved with fine scrollwork, borders, and game scenes. The upper tang and furniture have coordinating scroll and border engraving. The stock has checkering on the forend and wrist, a silver wrist escutcheon, and a long shadow-line cheek rest. Two brass protectors are installed, and two nipples are included.

ConditionVery good with attractive Damascus patterns visible along the barrel along with a dark "tobacco brown" blend of faded original finish and dark patina, light gray patina on the locks, repaired left hammer, darker brown or gray patina on most of the furniture, somewhat faint markings on the barrel and locks, otherwise generally crisp engraving, and mild age and storage related wear. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, a faint and very minor hairline crack at the tail of the right lock, slight edge wear, and general light marks and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
