Johann Leonhart Dotter is listed as active in the mid 19th century in Wurzburg, Bavaria. The left barrel has straight four groove rifling, and the right barrel has two-groove rifling (possibly for use with a lightly belted ball). This makes this a very versatile piece able to use combinations of shot and ball. It has a blade and notch sights, "J. L. Dotter in Wurzburg" in gold inlay on the breech section of the rib, textured Damascus barrels with gold bands at the breech, a finely detailed fox and fowl scene on the right lock, equally detailed doe scene on the left lock, traditional Germanic black leaf engraving, right single set trigger, plain left trigger, horn grip extension, checkered wrist, and "Das/Corps Rhenania/S/M l./Dr Cufsius/z.f.E./Wurzburg/1868" inscribed on the butt. Corps Rhenania Würzburg is a fraternity in Wurzburg founded in 1842 by students at Wurzburg University (aka Julius-Maximilians-Universitat Wurzburg) which is well-known for medical research in the 19th century such as the discovery of X-rays. A Dr. Cufsius is recorded as working in the 1869 at the Juliusspital, a hospital associated with the university.

Fine with light brown and gray and attractive Damascus pattern and texture along the barrels, bright original gold inlays, gray furniture, crisp engraving, some minor oxidation, and genera minor age and storage wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, and some light scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
