A) Scherping Double Barrel Shotgun Gun 1

Save for a few small details this is a matched set. Blue Damascus steel, dovetailed barrels, marked "H. SCHERPING HOF-BUCHSENMACHER/HANOVER" on the right and left respectively with 2 1/2 inch chambers with a single extractor, single bead sight on the matte, concave rib, improved modified/full chokes, gold inlaid "1" on the rib extension, and standard German proofs on the flats with later style proofs on the barrel sides. Casehardened, scalloped box lock action with Greener style crossbolt, full coverage floral and scroll engraving, gold inlaid "1" on the break lever, dual triggers, and Greener style side safety. Checkered splinter forearm with engraved fittings, inlaid metal oval with detailed crest, round knob pistol grip stock with checkered horn grip extension, and checkered horn buttplate. With modern hardwood takedown case fitted for both guns. Bore and stock measurements for Gun A (R/L): chambers measured at 2 1/2 inches; bores 9 inches from the breech proved at 13/1 (.719) and measured at .730/.732; chokes measured at .027/.038; minimum wall thickness .025/.023; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/2 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches; cast-on; weight 6 lbs. 5 oz.

ConditionFine as professionally refinished with 85% of the blue finish remaining, some areas of a thin gray patina and visible Damascus pattern, and traces of light pitting under the blue. The receiver has a mostly gray patina with shadows of original case colors in the protected areas, light spotting, and handling marks overall. The wood is also fine with well defined though worn checkering, visible cracks at the wrist, small scuffs and dings throughout, and some cracking on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent.

Casehardened, scalloped boxlock receiver with Greener style crossbolt, full coverage floral and scroll engraving, standard proofs on the water table, dual triggers, and Greener style side safety. Checkered splinter forearm with engraved fittings, inlaid metal oval with intricate crest, and pistol grip stock with a checkered horn buttplate. Bore and stock measurements for Gun B (R/L): chambers measured at 2 1/2 inches; bores 9 inches from the breech proved at 13/1 (.719) and measured at .726/.725; chokes measured at .027/.032; minimum wall thickness .028/.024; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/2 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches; cast-on; weight 6 lbs. 6 oz.

With 90% of the blue finish remaining, some areas of flaking and brown patina on the underside of the barrels, distinct markings, and traces of light pitting under the blue. The receiver has 60% original case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina with well defined engraving and handling marks. The wood is also fine with attractive figure, well defined checkering, and small dings and dents throughout. Mechanically excellent.
