Per Blackmore's "Gunmaker's of London, 1350-1850," Joseph Griffin active from c. 1750-1784 and was "Gentlemen Armourer to His Majesty's Stables-in-Ordinary" from 1760 and "Gunmaker to His Majesty near the Duke of Grafton's, Bond St." starting in 1763. The trigger guards have London silver hallmarks for 1759 ("D") and silversmith's mark "JA" (Jeremiah Ashley or Joseph Allen). The smoothbore barrels are sightless and have "GRIFFIN LONDON" on top with an engraved border and London proofs flaking "IG" maker's marks on the left. The upper tang is engraved, and the "GRIFFIN" marked locks have light border engraving. The ramrod pipes, side plates, trigger guards, escutcheons, and pommel caps are all silver and have various designs, including masks on the caps, a flower on the guards, and a crest of a snarling dog over a torse on the escutcheons. The mask caps are screwless and are not one of the more common designs but are seen on other pistols, including a pair from 1777-1778 with silver furniture made by John King. The stocks have tear drop flats and shell carving around the barrel tangs. The ramrods have horn tips.
