Description:

This is a WWII M1C Garand manufactured sniper rifle that was sold through the CMP Program in Mar 2011. This is a very late WWII production example originally manufactured in April of 1945. It was overhauled/rebuilt at some point and it is now fitted with a Springfield barrel, marked "S-A-12-54" with the breech in the white with an all dark black metal finish. This model was originally developed in 1944, and was the first production-level sniper variant of the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. Although very effective in the hands of a trained sniper it proved to be very time consuming to manufacture with actual documented field use during WWII being somewhat limited. It was continued to be used in the Korean War where it saw considerable use and even into Vietnam. It was eventually replaced by the late M1D, sniper rifle version which could be produced in-house by Springfield using a newly manufactured replacement sniper barrel and the appropriate scope and mount. It is estimated that over 4000 total were produced with many being given to various NATO allies in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It is fitted with a set of mix WWII/post war manufactured parts, as follows: Bolt, -12SA, Hammer SA C5546068 Trigger Housing, -12-SA, Op Rod, 6535382 HRA. It has post war wide base gas cylinder and a high top gas cylinder lock. It has a matching scope base, fitted with three screws and two taper pins that is numbered on the underside with "3692183". The base is fitted with a Griffin & Howe M1C mount that is numbered "3373970" on the back side, that has been reparkerized. It is fitted with a commercial Lyman Alaskan scope with the post and cross-hair reticle, with the standard three line company markings followed by serial number "28817". It is fitted with walnut stock and handguard set and the stock has a circled "P" proof with a small Defense Eagle cartouche on the left side. It does not come with any accessories, other than the scope and mount.

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of the Greek arsenal, dark black, refurbished metal finish showing only minor edge and high spot wear overall with some light cycling action on the receiver. The wood components are all in very fine condition as arsenal refurbished with a nice original dark oil finish overall showing only minor handling marks and light scratches in some areas. The cartouche/proofs are both clear and distinct. The mount retains 95% of its light gray reparkerized metal finish and the scope retains 95% of its blue finish. The reticle is intact and the optics are clear.
