Historic Schultz & Larsen Model 54 Bolt Action Rifle Inscribed to American Air Force General Curtis LeMay with Scope

Blade font and folding ladder rear sights, the barrel marked "WEATHERBY/378 MAGNUM", "WEATHERBY CUSTOM" on the engraved floorplate, and the S&L Denmark address on the left side of the receiver. A Weatherby Imperial 4x81 scope is mounted to the receiver with a set of tilting rings. The stock is finely skip-line checkered, and has a raised right handed cheekpiece, Weatherby-marked vented recoil pad, and a brown leather sling. A decorative inlay is present on the underside of the forearm, with a set of four 5-pointed stars around a silver plaque inscribed "GENERAL/CURTIS/LEMAY". LeMay, one of the main pioneers of American long-range strategic bombing during World War II and into the Cold War, is known to have been an avid collector of weaponry; while we have no explicit documentation placing this rifle with his collection, it does appear to be of appropriate aesthetic and mechanical quality for the Generals weapons. Also includes a copy of "LIFE" Vol. 42, No. 23 from June 10, 1957, in which the cover story is about a safari LeMay participated in. LeMay used a bolt action rifle during his hunts as seen in the photographs within, and the consignor believes this is that rifle. These Schultz & Larsen Weatherbys in .378 Magnum were first manufactured the year prior.

ConditionVery fine, with 85% plus original blue finish, showing some areas of brown patina, spotting, and mild handling marks. The stock is very good, with a few minor chips and scuffs. The optics are clear. The magazine follower is absent, otherwise mechanically fine.
