Description:

This is a rare example of a Colt Model 1895, "38 D.A." revolver manufactured circa 1904 under contract for the U.S. Navy. It has the standard 6 inch barrel with the top roll-stamped with the two-line Colt Hartford address and 1884, 1888 and 1895 patent dates and the left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber designation "COLT.D.A.38". The frame, cylinder crane and cylinder latch all have the matching assembly number of "1999" with the back side of the cylinder and extractor pin both numbered "527". The butt is roll-stamped: "U.S.N./Naval Anchor/38 DA/16 648/J.L.S./226979". The left side of the trigger guard bow, the cylinder crane, the locking latch and back side of the cylinder are all stamped with a five-pointed star with "W" in the center. This marking indicates that the revolver was returned to Colt for inspection/repair. It is fitted with smooth unnumbered, walnut grips that are stamped with a small "R.A.C." proof on the underside of each grip. The revolver has a Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder, with the hammer having a fire blue top surfaces with bright polished sides with an all nitre blued trigger. This revolver is accompanied by a very rare original 1894/1902 pattern USN marked leather holster. This holster is very similar to the regulation U.S. Army holster except that it has a smaller belt loop on the back side and the flap is stamped with "U.S.N." in a small oval.

Rating Definition:

Fine condition overall with 40% of the original blue finish showing even honest wear overall showing honest original field use. The grips are also in good condition with a nice smooth exterior showing very fine proofs on the undersides with minimal wear and handling marks overall, with some slight warpage on the lower front edges. The rare Navy holster is also in very good condition with nice clear markings with tight stitching showing original age cracking on the leather, mostly on the flap and upper part of the holster body. Mechanically fine. This is a very nice, honest and all original U.S. Navy marked Colt Model 1895 D.A. revolver rig.
