Description:

Manufactured in 1915, this New Service shows a combination of the standard Colt commercial markings and British military marks, including a "crown/G2/L" and a broad arrow on the frame near the hammer, small "crossed pennants" stamps on the frame and the rear cylinder face, and two "intercepting arrowhead" acceptance/release stamps on the frame. No London or Birmingham commercial proof marks are present, though a cleanly applied "SIMPSON LTD G'BURG IL" import mark is present on the butt. Acquired by the British for military use as early as 1899, the Colt New Service was an accepted private-purchase sidearm, and was known to be popular with the British officer corps leading up to and during World War One. Fitted with a pair of checkered hard rubber grips. With an unmarked brown leather flap holster, which has been modified with a riveted shoulder strap (since cut off) and a set of buckling belt loops.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 80% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish, showing the start of a brown patina on the barrel, scattered surface rust and edge wear, and some mild handling marks overall. Some heavier spotting is present on the sides of the frame and on the hammer. The grips are excellent, with some dents and flat spots. The holster is very good as modified, with some scuffing and cracking. Mechanically excellent.
