Description:

Manufactured from 1959 to 1985 (all variants), the MiG-21 (Western designation Fishbed) was a widely distributed and formidable supersonic fighter, serving in over 50 air forces on four continents and deployed in numerous conflicts, including the Vietnam War where it was the primary adversary against U.S. F-4 Phantom IIs. The MiG-21 developed out of the lessons learned in the Korean War and became the most produced supersonic jet aircraft. After 60 years, the easy to operate, easy to maintain and cost effective fighter is still operational with air forces across the globe. With its mid-mounted delta wing featuring squared off tips, long tubular fuselage, air intake in the nose, and large dorsal spine flush with the canopy, the MiG-21 has an unmistakable silhouette that, in the hands of an experienced pilot, made for a formidable adversary. This example (serial number 94A7809) was built in 1972, flew with the Polish Air Force and has a USSR paint scheme and Tumansky R-25-300 afterburning turbojet engine. Purportedly, this MiG was purchased directly through the Polish government after the fall of the Soviet Union, disassembled, crated and shipped to the United States where it was reassembled and made air worthy. Once in the U.S., it was learned that the aircraft retained its original Soviet attack radar system. Reportedly, the owner originally resisted the CIA's order for it to be confiscated and was told that if the radar system was to be activated, the aircraft would be shot down. Eventually, the owner came to his senses and relinquished the attack radar to American authorities. The aircraft was flow at the 1998 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Sometime in the 2000/2010s, the aircraft was placed on static display. Comes with incomplete flight/maintenance records (copies in English from the late 1990s-2000), Soviet flight helmet, oxygen mask and flight suit, and consignor research.

Rating Definition:

The aircraft is currently disassembled for transportation purposes. The wings, horizontal stabilizers, and engine have been removed from the fuselage. A parts inventory has not been completed, and some of the instruments have been replaced with American made products. The aircraft is out of annual inspection, and the aircraft is therefore sold as is. This MiG-21 makes for an impressive piece of Cold War Soviet history and is a testament to Russian aircraft design.
