Description:

This is an exceptionally example of an early DWM Model 1906 Swiss Commercial Luger with the very desirable "Abercrombie and Fitch Co." markings. These early commercial Lugers were originally intended for sale in Switzerland; however, due to the large demand for Lugers in the U.S. pre-WWI DWM diverted some production from their Swiss contract to their U.S. agent and on to the Abercrombie & Fitch Co. of New York. This scarce Luger has the early style short frame with the 1906 style grip safety, no stock lug and is correctly marked "GELADEN" on the extractor, with the first pattern unaltered safety that has the polished lower safety area on the frame. The chamber is marked with the standard Swiss cross in a sunburst, with the top of the barrel roll marked: "ABERCROMBIE & FITCH Co NEW YORK MADE IN SWITZERLAND". It is correctly numbered in the commercial manner with the front of the frame stamped (3187i) and the underside of the barrel stamped with serial number "3187" running parallel to the bore with no other visible commercial proofmarks. It has the last two digits of the serial number (87) on the side plates, trigger, take down lever, grip safety and rear toggle. The Luger is fitted with a correct Swiss pattern magazine with the nickel plated body and an unmarked wooden base with the circular inserts. The pistol has a rust blue finish with straw colored small components and checkered walnut grips. Interestingly, this excellent Luger is accompanied by a letter from Abercrombie & Fitch (dated Sept 1960) in which they state that this pistol was one of a lot of 100 pistols received from Switzerland in 1922 and later sold in Nov 1926. It was one of 49 lugers in that lot with the 4 5/8th inch barrel and 7.63 caliber. At that time the selling price for this Luger was $30.00!

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 99% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear and clear sharp markings. The walnut grips are in near new condition with a nice darker matching color overall with a few very minor nicks on the checkering on the upper right side grip. An interesting early Swiss Luger pistol.
