Description:

This WWII German M30 Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle was manufactured by the J. P. Sauer and Sohn company. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater and was intended to provide a high quality survival weapon in the event of a forced landing. These are a three-barreled combination gun consisting of two 12 gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3X74R rifled barrel. These prewar drilling always the exhibit beautiful, high quality workmanship that J. P. Sauer was noted for. They have a high polish blued metal finish on the barrel, sling swivels and barrel release lever with a beautiful color casehardened finish on the receiver, trigger guard and forend latching mechanism. They were always fitted with select high quality European walnut that exhibits a hand checkered pistol grip and forearm area with a hand rubbed oil finish. The quality of the fit and finish on these weapons rivals anything that was produced in the U.S. at that time. The underside/face of the rear barrel lug has a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark, along with the standard "Eagle/N" Commercial firing proofmark on each barrel. As noted the rifle barrel is also stamped with a very small "Eagle/M" type proofmark which may indicate issuance/acceptance to the Nazi Kriegsmarine. The underside of each barrel is marked with the appropriate bore and gauge/caliber markings "12/65" and is stamped "142" for the month and year of manufacture. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the very end of the trigger guard tang. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" mark carrying the Nazi swastika. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. This drilling has a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail is marked with the matching serial number, with the intertwined "SS" proof for Sauer & Sohn along with the Commercial "Eagle N" firing proof on the right side. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL", and a larger intertwined "SS" logo is on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece, a casehardened pistol grip cap, and a black plastic serrated buttplate with the intertwined Sauer & Sohn "SS" logo in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with the large prominent "Luftwaffe Eagle/swastika" insignia. The partial serial number "7851" is stamped on top of the metal attaching iron, inside of the forearm. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch and is marked directly behind that with a small "W./St.". When engaged, the rifle barrel selector raises a folding 100 meter rear sight on the rib and engages the forward trigger. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. This drilling has a diminutive high quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard, and engraved screw heads, and the forearm and pistol grip are finely checkered. The drilling is stored in an aluminum carrying case that has the dark gray/black painted exterior, with a black stenciled contents listing inside lid. The case has an unusual, very small Luftwaffe/Krieghoff "Eagle/2" acceptance proof on the front of the case directly above the carrying handle. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling and accessories. The rifle includes the three piece wooden cleaning rod only.

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of the restored, professionally applied rust blue and color casehardened metal finish overall. The top rear areas of the barrels and also on the underside of both barrel along the side of the rifle barrel where they are joined together, show some very minor pitting erosion. Most of the markings are clear and distinct as it was beautifully restored and blued. The complete receiver and forend attaching iron has also been beautifully restored with attractive looking case colors overall, with both retaining 99% of their case colors. The sides of the receiver also show some very minor pitting/erosion under the case colors. The wood components, buttstock and forend, both retain their original oil finish and checkering with minor handling marks on the sides in various areas, obviously from handling and use in the field. The wood has shrunk/pulled back slightly along the rear edges of the receiver and the under side along the trigger guard bow area. The large Luftwaffe proof on the side of the buttstock is deep and pronounced. The original markings on the receiver and sides of the barrels are clear and distinct and the action is still tight. The original metal storage case retains 80% of its outer painted surface and is missing the leather carrying handle.
