Description:

This is a very good example of a WWI German Gewehr rifle that was converted into a sniper rifle. These WWI rifles all started out as standard service rifles that were modified/converted to sniper configuration by the addition of a set of double claw scope bases and scope. There were generally two types of WWI sniper rifles: those with both of the scope bases/claw mounts mounted directly over the top and rear of the receiver and those with the front bases/claw mounts over the receiver with the rear set of the claw feet, off-set to the left side of the rear receiver. This example is fitted with a non-standard, undocumented, high type of scope bases over the centered of the receiver. The front scope base covers the receiver, so we can't identify the manufacturer; however, it has the standard crown over script letter proofs on the right side of the receiver and top of the barrel. The left side of the receiver has the Imperial Eagle proof, and the receiver sidewall is marked "GEW 98". It is fitted with a CENTAR commercial model scope made by the C. P. Goerz scope company, Berlin, that is so marked on the rear of the scope. The side of the scope body has been engraved "Gew. Nr. 751 U." The scope has post/cross hair type reticle and the rear scope ring is marked "D.G.R.M.". It is fitted with a walnut stock and handguard without finger grooves on the sides that lacks cuttout on the right side, below the bolt handle. The right side of the stock has the double Crown Proof under the bolt takedown washer and it is numbered on the underside. This rifle has the all the correct early milled parts and components with the H pattern upper band and the narrow pattern milled lower band. It comes with an old brown leather commercial scope case.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 40% of the blue finish remaining overall with the exposed metal having a silver/brown patina overall. The stock and handguard are in good condition with both having been sanded and reoiled with partially visible proof marks. The scope retains 75% of its blued finish with clear optics with a distinct reticle.
