Savage Navy Model Percussion Revolver with Alsop Patent Style Shoulder Stock and Extra Carbine Length Barrel

Approximately 20,000 Savage Navy Model revolvers were manufactured in 1861 and 1862. Over half were manufactured under contract with the U.S. military. Very few of these revolvers were adapted for and fitted with detachable Charles R. Alsop patented shoulder stocks, and this is the first we have brought to auction with an extra carbine length barrel. One other revolver, formerly in the William Locke Collection, is known to have had a matching style carbine barrel (see page 345 of "The William M. Locke Collection" by Sellers). The extra barrel is 20 1/8 inches long, part-round and part-octagon, equipped with a small globe front sight and a loading lever catch, and has no markings. Joseph W. Alsop Sr. and his sons Joseph W. Alsop Jr. and Charles R. Alsop were all listed in the incorporation papers of the Savage Revolving Fire Arms Co. Charles was one of the main gunsmiths at Savage and later produced a limited number of his own spur trigger revolvers around 1862 and 1863. The Alsop revolvers were not really direct competitors with the Savage revolvers since they were designed for the civilian market. In addition to the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel, back of both grips, and right side of the frame, it is also numbered "1" on the bottom of the barrel, back of the cylinder, butt, right side of the back strap, and lower strap of the stock. The top strap is marked "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. MIDDLETOWN. CT./H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859. MAY 15 1860." It has post and notch sights. A small button at the toe releases the detachable shoulder stock. The shoulder stock fits into a groove on the bottom of the butt and a hole below the hump on the back strap. The toe of the buttplate on the underside is marked "17." The stock matches the pattern shown in Alsop's patent no. 28,433 from May 22, 1860. Also includes a copy of a August 1960 "The Gun Report" article about Alsop revolvers.

ConditionFine with 40% original blue finish, mostly smooth brown patina on the balance, mild oxidation, edge wear, and minor scratches and dings. The grips are very good with strong oiled finish and minor scrapes and pressure marks. The professionally made replacement shoulder stock has been refinished and has a smooth artificial gray patina on the hardware, a few small scratches and marks on the wood, and slightly loose rear rivet. The carbine length barrel has smooth mottled brown patina, light wear, and loose lever latch. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive example of a Savage Navy revolver made all the more desirable by its factory adaptations for the included scarce Alsop patent shoulder stock and a virtually unheard of carbine length barrel that would be an excellent addition to any collection of antique American percussion revolvers.
