Description:

Set into an embossed brown leather case measuring 3 1/8 inches wide and 3 5/8 inches tall, both of these Sixth Plate tintypes are set into gilt brass frames with 2 inch wide and 2 1/2 inch tall oval viewing areas, showing light blush accents on the cheeks and lips. In the left side of the case is a tintype of a young woman in somber clothing holding a small child. On the right is a young man in what appears to be a Confederate uniform, with traces of gold paint on the buttons, a light colored coat secured with a single button over a checkered shirt. A brass "crossed swords" cavalry unit badge bearing the letter "A" is present on his cap, and an early Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with the distinctive fluted cylinder is tucked into his belt. Part of the very start of Model 1860 production, a small number of fluted cylinder Colt Army revolvers are known to have made their way South prior to the outbreak of hostilities, and would have represented top of the line firepower for the era. The relationship between the two portraits or the exact identity of the subjects is undocumented, though there is a high likelihood they are both members of a single family unit.

Rating Definition:

Both tintypes are very good, with some streaking and crackling of the images, though retaining good detail in the faces and revolver. The case shows some mild wear and tear, with a few small areas of material loss and mild bending of the matting. The ultimate accessory item for your Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army Revolver!
