Development of the Peabody rifles and carbines began early in the Civil War but the war ended before they got any government contracts. Many foreign contracts were gained however which led to some of these rifles and carbines seeing action in the Franco-Prussian War. This carbine shows standard markings and features including "WC" foreign contract cartouche on the stock.
