Description:

Joshua and Charles Barstow of Exeter, New Hampshire, were contracted for 2,500 muskets in the 1808 contract, approximately 2,375 of which are believed to have been delivered. It follows the standard Springfield pattern with "EXETER/J&C.B" marked on the lock behind the cock and an eagle and oval "U.S." mark in front. The barrel is marked with a script "US" as well as an "eagle/CT" proof indicating it was built under contract. The frizzen, cock, and back of the lock are numbered "23". The front sling swivel is absent. A very good example of a rare early U.S. military longarm. There is a U.S. GI style dog tag attached to the rear sling swivel listing the model and manufacturer.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing mostly a thin smooth brown patina/oil staining with a few areas of silver-grey patina showing through. The wood is also very good with numerous minor dings and scratches throughout, some scattered minor chipping concentrated mainly on edges, and a minor crack near the front lock screw. Mechanically very fine.
