U.S. Springfield Model 1875 Officer's Trapdoor Rifle

Officer's Model rifles were manufactured by the Springfield Armory between 1875 and 1885. There have been estimated to have been approximately a hundred of this third type manufactured with Model 1877 and 1879 features. These rifles were designed to fulfill requests by military officers for suitable sporting rifles for use in hunting and target shooting. All three variations of the Model 1875 are incredibly scarce and sought out by collectors due to their high overall quality, rarity, historical significance, and connection to military officers during the late 19th century Indian Wars. Very few collections contain one of these variations let alone all three. They are not serial numbered, but this example is marked "25" inside the trigger guard bow and "51" on the stock by the upper tang. Many of the components come from a standard Model 1879 trapdoor rifle, but the rifle is embellished with traditional acanthus scroll engraving on the various components other than the barrel and features a shorter 26 inch barrel, folding combination blade and globe front sight in place of the military front sight, a Model 1879 style rear sight graduated 1-5 on the left side of the "ski-jump" base which is also marked "R" and 6-12 on the ladder which is also marked "R," a peep sight mounted on the upper wrist, single set trigger, shorter sporting stock with checkered forend and wrist, a detachable checkered pistol grip extension, rounded face nickeled forend cap, and a traditional style cleaning rod mounted below the barrel. It has the standard arsenal markings on the barrel, breechblock, lock, and buttplate and the circled "P" behind the checkering. Included with the rifle is 2015 correspondence with Professor C. Vance Haynes of the University of Arizona School of Anthropology discussing the rifle and that Dr. Haynes was working on a book detailing variations in these arms in more detail than the three types generally recognized by collectors. His Officers' Sporting Rifles book does not appear to have been published yet, but this rifle may be documented in it when it is. In addition to his work on geology and anthropology, Haynes has published "General Custer and His Sporting Rifles."

ConditionFine with crisp engraving and markings, 40% original blue finish faded to mottled brown patina, traces of original case colors, gray and brown patina on the balance, some mild oxidation, and general mild wear. The stock is very fine with crisp checkering, smooth oiled finish, and some minor scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1875 Officer's rifle.
