Extremely Rare Winchester First Model 1866 "Flat Side" Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1866. This is a rare first model with the brass receiver lacking the flare at the junction with the forearm, having the same drop in front of the hammer as the Henry rifle and having two upper tang screws. First models are seen up through the 15000 serial number range. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The matching serial number ("13821") is marked on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet and buttplate. The barrel has the first style, two-line Henry address/King patent dates legend, a dovetail blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The hammer correctly lacks a half cock feature, and the bolt retains the original rimfire firing pin. The forearm and straight grip stock are nicely figured walnut. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor brass buttplate (cleaning rod absent). According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, the total number of First Model 1866s manufactured was approximately 3,500 guns equally divided between rifles and carbines. He further estimated that the survival rate for these early Winchesters was approximately 25% and that "less than 875" First Model 1866 rifles and carbines were available to collectors. The majority of these are carbines.

ConditionVery good. The barrel and magazine tube have cold blue touch up mixed with a smooth dark brown patina overall. The brass has an aged appearance with some freckling of darker patina. The forend cap is absent. The forearm is cracked and repaired, otherwise the wood is fine with numerous dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. It is not often that we catalog Winchester Model 1866 flat side rifles. No Winchester lever action collection can be considered complete without a very rare Winchester First Model 1866 flat side rifle.
