Description:

Alexander McComas (1821-1892) was active c. 1843-1875 at 51 South Calvert Street in Baltimore and was one of the regions best known gunmakers. It is said that McComas refused to sell three Confederate sympathizers weapons at the beginning of the war, and one of the men was greeted by two Colts when he tried to force the issue. McComas, his son, and a journeyman then quickly hid the weapons and ammunition before a mob rushed the store in retaliation and were likewise greeted by an armed response and told the weapons had been moved. The rifle has blade and notch sights, "A. Mc COMAS BALTIMORE" on the barrel, double set triggers, scroll engraved lock and furniture, "A.Mc COMAS" on the lock, prominent cheekpiece, and checkering on the forend and wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a coating of protective varnish throughout, mostly gray patina on the barrel, darker patina on the lock, some minor pitting as well as some casting pits on the furniture, distinct markings and engraving. Crisp checkering is visible on the refinished stock with a small repair by the wrist escutcheon, and general minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine.
