The Model 27 was first advertised in 1909 and replaced with the improved Model 27S only two years later which remained in production until 1932. Very few were engraved or remain in high condition. This example is marked "Marlin/No 27" on the upper tang but has the Model 27S button on the right side of the receiver suggesting it may have been manufactured during a transitional period around 1911. It has a beaded blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, two-line address and patent marking ahead of the rear sight, "32-20" on the upper right flat at an angle below the rear of the rear sight to accommodate the factory scroll engraving on the breech section of the barrel, deluxe "F" pattern checkered stock and forearm, and beautiful detailed scroll, border, and game scene engraving on the sides of the action consisting of a pair of rabbits on the right and a pair of squirrels on the left that matches factory No. 5 engraving by Alden George Ulrich who served as an engraver for Marlin starting in 1905 and joined Winchester around April of 1920. The serial number is on the left side of the upper tang and in the upper tang mortise of the stock.

Excellent overall with 90% plus of the original matte style blue finish, beautiful detailed engraving that remains crisp, minor cycling and edge wear, isolated slight spotting, and light scratches and marks. The wood has a few pressure marks in the otherwise crisp checkering and otherwise only general light surface scratches and dings. The button on the action is stuck, but it is otherwise mechanically fine. This is a beautiful example of a very scarce factory engraved, deluxe Model 27S.
