Very Fine Documented Colt Lightning Medium Frame Slide Action Saddle Ring Baby Carbine from the Collection of King Alfonso XIII of Spain

Manufactured in 1901. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration as a Baby Carbine as well as shipment to Colt's London Agency on 19 June 1901. This particular carbine comes from the private collection of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, as evidenced by the collection tag marked "PATRIMONIO NACIONAL" on the buttstock. The tag is also marked "B.P.", which according to included research from Pete Holder, stands for "Bien Privado" (Private Goods), meaning that this carbine was never given to the public collections to be displayed in the state museums of Spain. Alfonso's reign was turbulent leading to him fleeing the country in 1931. He placed his support behind the nationalist cause and Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War, but with Franco's refusal to reinstate the monarchy, Alfonso finally abdicated in 1941. Alfonso and his father were known throughout Europe as avid sportsmen and gun collectors, with their personal collections being known to contain the highest quality and most technologically advanced in firearms of the day. This carbine along with other guns of the collection were sold at auction in 2014 by a very close member of the royal family. The carbine shows standard markings and features along with standard British proofs and the previously mentioned collection tag on the buttstock.

ConditionVery fine, retains 90% original blue finish and strong nitre blue/case colors on the small parts with some minor scratches and dings, and some mild edge/high spot wear. The wood is also very fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A scarce chance to own a Colt firearm connected to a European monarch.
