Incredibly Rare Factory Panel Scene Engraved Perry Patent Arms Co. Breech Loading Percussion Shotgun

The Perry Patent Arms Co. produced a relatively small number of military carbines along with single shot pistols and custom ordered sporting guns in varying calibers and configurations; all of these weapons are scarce. They were based on designs by Alonzo D. Perry who previously worked as a blacksmith in New York in the 1840s and also held other unrelated patents. The company was formed in 1853 and failed around 1855 despite succeeding in getting a contract from the government for 200 carbines that year. This shotgun is very unusual and the only like it we've seen. It has a Birmingham proofed, multi-stage, Damascus steel barrel with a front sight bead; none of the usual serial numbers, forearm secured by two screws and fitted with a pewter cap, the Perry patented cap magazine inserted through the buttstock, and extensive engraving on the action and furniture with primarily scrollwork patterns, some floral accents, dogs on the sides of the frame, and a patriotic shield on the lever loop.

ConditionGood with a mix of original brown finish and dark brown patina along the barrel as well as some visible Damascus patterns, lighter gray patina on the action and most of the furniture, some oil staining and light pitting, lightly worn but legible engraving, faint breechblock markings, and mild overall wear. The wood is very good and has attractive figure on the butt, small flakes and mild wear at the edges, general minor scrapes and dings, and oiled finish. Mechanically fine.
