Scarce Factory Engraved Perry Patent Arms Co. Breech Loading Percussion Sporting Rifle

The Perry Patent Arms Co. produced a relatively small number of military carbines along with single shot pistols and custom ordered sporting rifles in varying calibers and configurations; all of these weapons are scarce. They were based on designs by Alonzo D. Perry who previously worked as a blacksmith in New York in the 1840s and also held other unrelated patents. The company was formed in 1853 and failed around 1855 despite succeeding in getting a contract from the government for 200 carbines that year. Most of Perry's rifles and carbines, including this one, feature a tubular magazine fed through the butt that held 50 percussion caps. The rifle has full octagon barrel equipped with a globe front sight and elevation adjustable sporting rear sight with an elevator numbered to the gun. The matching serial number is also marked on the barrel and action on top at the breech, the wedge, back of the forearm, and on the lever and may be found in other concealed areas. The breechblock has "A.D. PERRY/PATENTED" perpendicular to the bore at the front and "PERRY PATENT ARM Co./NEWARK, N.J./1855" parallel to the bore at the center. The components other than the barrel have detailed acanthus scrollwork, and the engraving patterns match those on the Perry sporting rifle in the NRA National Firearms Museum. An adjustable long range "lollipop" peep sight is fitted to the upper tang. The stock and forearm are smooth walnut and have a pewter forend cap and casehardened buttplate.

ConditionFine overall. The metal has 30% plus of the original blue finish mixed with primarily even brown patina and some minor oxidation. The re-oiled wood has some mild scratches and small dents and a few slight flakes at the edges. Mechanically fine.
