Elaborate Cased Pair of F.P. Caron of Paris Engraved and Relief Carved Ebony Stocked Percussion Dueling/Target Pistols and Accessories

A) F.P. Caron Dueling Pistol

F. P. Caron was active in Paris around 1852-1874 and served as a gunmaker to Napoleon III, first the elected president of the Second French Republic (1848-1852) and then emperor of the Second French Empire (1852-1870). The markings indicate the set was made in the latter period. The rifled barrels have dovetailed post front sights, "F. P. Caron a Paris, Arq. de S.M. l'Empereur" inscribed on the top flats, and "427" on the bottom flats. The patent breeches and upper tangs have floral scroll engraving and "1" (B) and "2" (A). The tangs also have fixed notch rear sights. The locks have matching floral scroll engraving and "CARON A PARIS." in small letters above the hammers. The spur style trigger guards and pommel caps also have coordinating engraving patterns. The stocks have very finely detailed relief carved scroll and floral patterns that match the metal. They come in a very attractive ebonized hardwood case with engraved brass hardware in scroll patterns along with "JT" in Gothic script on the lid. The inside of the lid has the Imperial Coat of Arms of France during the Second Empire over "CARON/ARQR, DE S.M. L'EMPEREUR/20 PASSAGE DE L'OPERA/A PARIS," and the fitted interior contains the pistols, pairs of ramrods and cleaning rods, containers for patches and caps, an oiler, a mallet, a bullet mold, a measure, a nipple wrench, some lead balls, and a key.

ConditionVery fine with 90% plus original blue finish on the barrel, aged patina on the silver wedge escutcheons, smooth French gray on most of the remaining metal surfaces, some faint spotting, crisp markings and engraving, and minor wear. The stock is very fine aside from a hairline crack between the hammer and bolster and has crisp carving. Mechanically excellent.

B) F.P. Caron Dueling Pistol

See A.

ConditionVery fine with 90% plus original blue finish on the barrel, smooth French gray, natural aged patina on the silver, some slight oxidation, crisp markings and engraving, and minor wear. The stock is very fine with the exception of a crack in the wrist between the tail of the lock and the upper tang that appears to have been repaired in the period and has crisp carving. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with mild wear expected for its age, including some scrapes and dings on the exterior and some compression wear on the interior. The accessories are also fine with mild storage wear and aging. Overall this is a very attractive cased set of Parisian Second Empire dueling pistols by F.P. Caron, gunmaker to the final French emperor: Napoleon III.
