The lock plate is signed "John Rigby & Co" and features the Rigby logo, and the barrel is signed "John Rigby & Co Dublin & London." The rifle is fitted with a globe front sight with spirit level, folding ladder rear sight graduated from 100-1,000 yards, and a Vernier tang peep sight. There is a stud at muzzle to align a false muzzle (not included). The breech plug has a clean out screw. The barrel, breech plug, and stock are numbered to the gun. The nicely figured pistol grip half stock features checkering on the forearm and grip area, single barrel wedge, horn forend and grip caps, and checkered steel buttplate. The makers have kindly confirmed this rifle was completed on 5 November 1873 as a “Best Match Rifle” presented to “N of I Rifle Association” with a “2 ft. 9” barrel of 52 bore and fitted with “2nd Class Sights”. A presentation inscribed silver oval is located on the right side of the buttstock and reads, "Presented to North of India/RIFLE ASSOCIATION/BY/John Rigby & Co./1873." The India Rifle Association held annual shooting competitions throughout India, starting perhaps as early as the 1860s. Hercules Ross won the championship at least six times. The partitioned wooden case has a paper John Rigby & Co. label on the interior of the lid, lined with red felt, and containing a wood handled brass cleaning rod with swab, Rigby & Co. glass oiler, container, leather sling, James Dixon & Sons leather bound brass powder flask, and brass John Barker & Co. spotting scope with extra eye piece.
