Description:

This rifle was manufactured around 1861, see the data in "Alexander Henry: Rifle Maker" by Donald Dallas, by famed Scottish gunmaker Alexander Henry (1818-1894) of Edinburgh and featuring his famous patented rifling which was used around the world in the Martini-Henry rifles of the British Empire. The rifle has a flat top part octagon/part round barrel with an adjustable globe front sight, adjustable peep rear sight, "ALEXANDER HENRY, EDINBURGH" and "PATENT No. 510 GAUGE 451." on top, and an engraved breech plug with platinum liner. The lock and furniture also have fine English scroll engraving. The lock is signed "A. HENRY" and has a sliding half-cock safety. "964" is stamped on the bottom of the stock behind the wrist, and a vacant silver initial plate is further back. The stock is checkered between the lock and rear band and on the wrist, and sling swivels are mounted on the bottom of the front barrel band and the butt.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original case colors on the lock and cap box, traces of original finish elsewhere, primarily gray patina on the balance, some patches of oil staining, and mild scratches and marks. The engraving and markings are distinct. The lightly re-oiled stock is fine and has crisp checkering, a few small pressure marks, scrapes on the left flat, and lighter scratches elsewhere. Mechanically excellent.
