Description:

Manufactured in 1875. The revolver has a highly desirable period New York retailer nickel plating, an uncommon finish found on early Single Action Army Revolvers. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top, the frame has the two-line patent date marking on the left side, and the trigger guard is marked "45 CAL" on the left side. Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, cylinder ("1742"), and barrel ("1742"). The ejector rod has a correct bull's eye head. The revolver is fitted with a highly sought after, authentic cast metal and silver plated Tiffany grip featuring relief floral scrollwork, relief Civil War battle scenes on both sides, oval initial panel engraved with a monogram above a relief trophy of flags and shield on the back, and butt cap featuring a relief eagle. These highly embellished, relief cast Civil War battle scene Tiffany grips are generally encountered on a select few of deluxe Colt percussion and conversion revolvers. The earliest known Colt all metal grips date to 1847 and were supplied by the Colt factory. The rare cast grips on Colt revolvers were introduced circa 1861. New York retailer Hartley & Graham began advertising the cast metal grips around 1864. These grips generally featured the Civil War battle scene as found on this Single Action Revolver. From 1890 to 1909, Tiffany advertised richly embellished handgun grips with retail prices ranging from $50.00 to $300.00. From surviving examples Smith & Wesson clearly benefited the most from Tiffany's venture into the handgun grip market. Colts with Tiffany grips are a definite rarity. Surviving Tiffany grips are generally profusely decorated in Victorian art nouveau motifs. In fact, most of the design work was not duplicated, giving each grip its own unique pattern. Today, Tiffany stocked firearms are found in museum and prestigious private collections around the world. Includes an impressive sterling silver open top holster with profuse relief floral scroll motif on a matte background and large relief Mexican eagle on the front, leather interior and belt loop and carved hardwood toe.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 80% Hartley & Graham applied nickel finish with flaking turned to dark brown on the balance. The front strap is notched at the butt to accommodate the grip. The original case colors on the hammer have darkened. The grip is fine with some loss of finish mostly on the high edges, and the eagle butt cap is likely a replacement. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very fine with some loss stitching on the belt loop. Overall an impressive Single Action Army revolver with an equally impressive holster.
