This is a very fine example of an Winchester 52B Target rifle that has been fitted with an original custom barrel by A. W. Peterson of Denver Colorado that was then fitted with an all walnut laminated, thumb-hole target stock by Al Freeland. Uncle Al as he was known was a exceptional high power and small bore rifle shooter whose career started in the late 1930s all the way up until the early 1980s. He ran the Freeland Gun Shop in Rock Island for over 40 years that was a hot bed for target shooters. Through his shooting career Al set many world small bore records and was well know throughout the shooting community. This rifle has a medium weight, barrel that measures approximately 26 3/4 inch long that measures 1.10 inch at the muzzle and 1.20 at the breech. It is marked on the left rear side, "A. W. Peterson Denver Colorado". Peterson was a prominent gunsmith/barrel maker from the mid 1920s-late 1950s, learned the trade from George Schoyen who learned the trade from the famous Carlos Gove. So his barrel are regarded as highly accurate. The buttstock on this example is made from seven pieces of American walnut that has been laminated (glued together) and the shaped into a thumb-hole pattern type stock by Al Freeland. This rifle was actually one of Al's personal rifles and was only sold after his death by his son. It is fitted with one of Als adjustable custom barrel tuners and adjustable aluminum buttplate with his rubber buttpad. It is fitted with a custom handstop with a detachable sling swivel on the underside. It is also fitted with a custom Freeland adjustable trigger assembly and both sides of the palm swell are hand checkered.
Very fine with 95% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear showing shooting use over the years. The stock is in very fine condition with 95% of its original varnish overall showing only minor handling marks and scratches from actual use. A very nice looking example of a custom Winchester 52 B target rifle.
