Description:

This is a very fine example of a M1903A1 Springfield National Match rifle that has been modified into a very desirable WWII M1903A1 USMC Sniper style rifle fitted with the correct Unertl 8X "USMC SNIPER" marked telescopic sight. The Springfield M1903 receiver was manufactured circa 1931 that was fitted with a correct SA-produced 5-31 dated barrel, with the star-gauge mark on the muzzle. The rifle has a "N.S." marked bolt properly numbered on top that is still in the white unpolished condition. The safety and magazine cut-off have the late block markings with polished bright face on the cuttoff and it is fitted with a standard blade front sight and a NM type tangent rear sight with a bright polished face that does not have the 2750 notch on top of the slide. It is also fitted with a flat face windage and elevation knob. The top of the receiver and barrel are fitted with a set of color case hardened commercial scope blocks, (not the military versions) and it comes with a correct USMC marked Unertl telescope. The rear telescopic sight base is mounted directly in the middle of the receiver ring (which is incorrect) with the front base mounted on top of the barrel in front of the rear sight base and the receiver does not have the correct USMC modifications. The rifle has an original pistol grip type "C" stock with a boxed "DAL" cartouche on the left side with a circled "P" proof in the pistol grip. The rifle serial number (1370597) properly has been stamped on the underside in front of the lower sling swivel and it has the correct coarse-checkered NM buttplate. It is fitted with a late 1930s, newly remachined, handguard with a short cutout for the front scope block with a dished out section on the right side for the front scope ring locking screw. The blued telescopic sight is marked on the rear of the tube: "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER", and it is fitted with a fine wire cross-hair reticle with no center dot, with black anodized Unertl telescopic sight mounts. As noted the bases are both color-case hardened type Unertl type bases and not a USMC type scope bases. It comes with a blued front sight cover and the screw in lens covers for the Unertl telescope.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% of the original parkerized finish overall as modified and noted above, with minor edge and high spot wear. The stock and modified handguard are both in very fine condition with a nice matching medium brown color overall with clear sharp cartouches and proofs with minimal handling marks overall. The Unertl scope is also in very fine condition with 95% of its current blue finish overall with clear marks, showing only minor wear on the tube. The optics are clear and the reticle is intact. Although it is mounted on the rifle the rear mount cross-screw was broken at some point and should be repaired by a competent scope shop.
