Description:

This is an identified/inscribed example of a "US PROPERTY" marked Colt Model 1903 General Officers Model pocket automatic pistol that was manufactured circa 1942. This pistol comes with a Certificate of Ownership from the Dept. of the Army, Headquarters WEACOM, Rock Island Arsenal to Brigadier General James T. Keltner, dated August 1971. This lot also includes his original General Officers black leather holster, leather belt, double magazine pouch, with a spare magazine and his original Gold Plated " GO" belt buckle . Additionally this pistol has been inscribed (non-factory) on the front right side of the slide with "B.G. J.T. Keltner" . This was a very successful pistol for Colt as it had great commercial sales and was also issued as a General Officers pistol from WWII until the early 1970s. The left side of the slide has the standard two line Colt address/patent dates with the Rampant Colt behind the serrations, with the right side marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 32 RIMLESS SMOKELESS". The left side of the frame is serial numbered "571129" and the left side is marked "U.S. PROPERTY" directly above the trigger. It has the standard fixed front and rear sights and is fitted checkered walnut grips with the silver Colt medallions. As noted it is a complete "GO" rig with the black leather holster, belt, double mag pouch and spare magazine, cleaning rod and brush and three boxes of Remington 32 ACP ammunition. This desirable pistol is listed in the book "The Colt U.S. General Officer's Pistols" by Greeley on page 96 as being issued by Rock Island Arsenal in 1971, obviously to BG Keltner since it matches the noted transfer letter. BG Keltner's military career started in 1937 when he enlisted in the Texas National Guard. He was mobilized with the 36th Infantry Division in November 1940. He transferred to the Army Air Corps, where he was commissioned an officer in 1944 and served in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. After the war he became a member of the California National Guard and in September of 1976 he was promoted to the rank of Major General. The following year he became commander of the California Task Force in Alameda. He retired on March 31, 1979, after 42 years of military service as Major General, as Commandant of the 40th Infantry Division, California National Guard. He was also a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, Armed Forces Institute and also a graduate or the U.S. Army War College. He was laid to rest in Alameda, CA. on April 16 2015 at the age of 96.

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of a high polish (non-factory) refurbished blue finish, most likely done when his name was engraved on the slide. The markings are still clear and the edges and corners are still sharp. The grips are in fine condition with nice checkering overall with an extra coat of varnish applied. The leather GO holster and belt rig are all in very fine condition showing actual use with only light wear in some areas. Obviously he wore and used his pistol proudly!
