Description:

This is an M1 Garand that originally was manufactured circa August 1944 and subsequently arsenal refurbished/upgraded to an M1D Sniper configuration, probably for Korea or Vietnam. The barrel is an early Springfield M1D sniper barrel marked, "S-A-1-52" with the integral scope base on the rear. As noted it is fitted with one of the very scarce early 1960s era "1 Inch" M1D scope mounts that is fitted with a Weaver 60-B commercial 4X scope. Development for this scope mount began in July 1964 with the issuance of the Purchase Order (No. LX-1095-X) from the American Firearms Corp to the International Armaments Corp Alexandria VA. It was eventually followed up with a formal order in mid 1965. The intent being to eventually having them adopted by the military for use in Vietnam as an improvement over the M84 sniper scopes, however that use has not been documented. It has been noted that in the mid 1990s the CMP did sell approximately 75 of these rare mounts and several M1D sniper rifles were sold through the lottery system that did include these rare 1 inch mounts. The history and subsequent use of this rare variant sniper rifle is documented on pages 533-536 in the book: The M1 Garand by Canfield. The Weaver scope has an all blued commercial finish with the desirable post and cross-hair reticle. It has a mix of WWII and post war internal components as follows: Bolt -12 SA, Trigger Housing 12-SA, Hammer C46008-5SA, Op Rod: D35382-9SA with relief cut. It has standard post war front and rear sights, with a post-war, wide base gas cylinder. It has a standard walnut stock and handguard set with a single circled "P" proof in the grip area and no visible cartouche with a standard checkered steel buttplate. It is fitted with a leather laced on, cheekpiece marked, "MRT/8-51". The top of the tube has the standard Weaver commercial markings. It comes with a milled M2 flash hider and post war, green web sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the green parkerized finish on the receiver with a mixed gray/black parkerized finish on the remaining parts, with edge and high spot wear overall with finish loss/thinning on the gas cylinder and lock and the right side receiver rail. There is a heavier gouge/flattened, battered spot visible on the very front right side of the receiver ring where it meets the scope barrel base. The wood components are all in very good as arsenal refurbished with minor/light handling marks in some areas. The Weaver scope retains 98% of its commercial blued finish with clear sharp optics. The leather cheekpiece is in excellent condition.
