Description:

Swivel guns were used on both sea going and inland vessels as well as forts and were particularly useful against massed attacks such as boarding parties. Lewis & Clarks and the Corps of Discovery mounted two of them on their keelboat for their journey up the Missouri River. This late 18th/early 19th century swivel gun has an approximately 2 inch bore that slightly flares out at the muzzle, "D" and "3" stamps on top near the breech, unmarked lock with bridled frizzen, Dutch style stock with carved butt, brass furniture, and an iron wear plate between the lock and swivel mount.

Rating Definition:

Very good with attractive aged patina on the brass, dark brown patina and mild oxidation/pitting on the lock and wear plate, absent forend band, and mild scratches and dings. The stock is good with repairs, moderate wear, and attractive profile. Mechanically fine. This behemoth would garner attention in any gun room!
