Description:

Wall guns were rested on window ledges or mounted on walls as they were too heavy to be fired from the shoulder. Note the barrel band mounted swivel for this purpose. Their large caliber meant they were more accurate and retained more ballistic energy at long range. Many wall guns were muzzle loaders, but this example has tip-up breechblock loaded somewhat similar to the American Hall rifles and carbines but with a different locking system that includes a portion of the breechblock sliding into the breech end of the barrel and thus should provide a better gas seal. This is an earlier example dated "1829" on the right side of the steel forend and has rather simple blade and notch/folding leaf sights. It is very similar to the French Model 1831. Next to the date noted above is a "crown/LV" mark, and "crown/L" is marked on the breechblock. There are some other small marks throughout. The lock appears to have been made from an altered French military lock manufactured at Charleville or Chatellerault (only "M/deC" visible). The serial number is on the upper tang and on the bottom of the breech locking bar. There is a "crown/EL" stamp on the right side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Fair with mottled gray and brown patina and extensive moderate pitting throughout, some minor chips and cracks in the re-oiled stock, and various scrapes and dings throughout. Mechanically fine.
