Description:

Attributed by the consignor as a German made prototype c.1870, this rifle is built around a casehardened receiver with a solid rear bridge. The bolt locks via a large block that serves as the base for the handle, with an extractor claw running in a track beneath the bolt and an enlarged body to the bolt head to aid in alignment. Fixed blade front sight with a folding ladder rear sight graduated "100" to "400" on the base, and "1400" on a fixed notch on top of the staff. "10.0" is marked on the left side of the chamber, with a "9" on the tip of the front barrel band and on the trigger guard screws, "crown/II" ahead of the bayonet lug, and an indistinct stamp on the right side of the trigger guard and on the heel of the buttplate. A safety switch is installed inside the trigger guard; when engaged, it physically blocks the trigger from moving, and also interferes with traditional finger placement. Fitted with a smooth straight wrist stock, with sling swivels and a flat, smooth buttplate. Provenance: This rifle was loaned by the consignor to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, light handling marks and spotting, and some mild edge wear. The case colors are a bit faded, but remain 75% intact on the bolt and receiver. The stock is fine, with some scratches, dents and scuffs. Mechanically fine.
