Description:

In a general sense, this item follows the typical profile and configuration of a traditional Japanese "hand cannon" tanegashima handgun, excluding two elements, namely the level of artistry and the size. The matchlock is, in a word, massive, coming in at 37 inches long and 6 inches wide, with a swamped muzzle nearly 4 inches in diameter across the flats and a bore approaching 2 inches. A fine brown finish is applied to the barrel, with a gold highlighted front sight, geometric patterns around the muzzle flats, a set of bi-metal ho-oh birds flanking a gold inscription on the top flats, and a 4 7/8 inch wide Tokugawa mon towards the breech. A set of translations of the markings on this pistol were provided by the consignor, including the inlaid legend on top ("heaven and earth roar with 100 thunders"), and notes on markings concealed on the underside of the barrel by the forearm, including a date (March 1, 1845, the 2nd year of the Koka era) and the name and address of the creator (Masayori Shirohachi Uchida of Higo Province). While not explicitly documented, the date of production, very fine decoration and the prominent Tokugawa mon suggests a Shogunate tribute piece. The lock plate is smooth brass construction, with a swiveling cover to protect the small flash pan and a traditional match holder arm. Fitted with a smooth stock, contoured for grip on the forearm and fitted with brass pin escutcheons and a brass band between the forearm and wrist

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. Much of the brown finish is present, with some areas of flaking, pitting concentrated on the face of the muzzle, and light wear and handling marks overall. The gold and silver details are sharp and well applied, with the latter showing a dark antique patina. Some cracks are visible in the otherwise fine wood, with the barrel pins and some of the escutcheons absent. A retention screw is absent from the lock plate, which is otherwise in good mechanical order.
