Scarce .45 Long Colt Caliber Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver

Caliber .45 Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver with full nickel-plated finish and two-piece walnut grips. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILLION N.Y. U.S.A." in a single line reading toward the muzzle. The caliber designation "45" is stamped on the left side of the frame ahead of the cylinder and on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers. The batch number, "1109" is stamped on the lower left hand side of the frame beneath the grip, on the inside of the loading gate and penciled on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The butt lacks the lanyard ring that was standard on early production revolvers. The U.S. Department of the Interior purchased 639 nickel-plated Model 1875 revolvers in 1883 for issue to Indian Police but no specific serial numbers or markings have been identified for the Remington Indian Police revolvers. The Model 1875 Remington Single Action Army revolvers competed with the Colt Single Action Army revolvers but lacked the advantage of significant government sales. An estimated 25,000-30,000 of these high quality revolvers were manufactured between 1875 and 1889.

ConditionVery fine. This revolver retains 75% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. There are spots of finish flaking along the left side of the barrel, on both sides of the ejector housing web and on the leading edges of the cylinder. The front edges of the cylinder have scattered light pitting. The loading gate retains about 60% of the plated finish. The right side of the hammer has spots of flash pitting and age discoloration. The walnut grips have been re-varnished and are in very good overall condition. The barrel legend, caliber marking and batch numbers are clear. The action is crisp. This is a very fine example of a scarce .45 caliber Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army revolver.
