This is a desirable first model variation of the Model 1873 featuring a dust cover held in place with grooved guides and cover with checked oval grip. The accompanying factory letter (copy) lists this rifle with a 30 inch round barrel and set trigger when received in the warehouse on July 11, 1879 and then on November 14, 1879 the configuration changed to a 24 inch octagon barrel and half magazine and shipped the next day. Dovetail blade front sight (replacement), elevation adjustable rear sight, standard Winchester markings, special order half magazine and set trigger, and straight grip stock with trapdoor buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Fine, retaining 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Some original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The slightly undersize refinished wood is very good with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
