The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel and plain trigger when received in the warehouse on September 2, 1878, and shipped on September 14. This is a desirable first model featuring a dust cover held in place with grooved guides and cover with checked oval grip. Dovetail blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking. The rifle correctly lacks caliber markings. "MODEL 1873" is stamped on the upper tang. The smooth straight grip stock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate. Comes with a four piece cleaning rod.

Fine, retaining 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. Strong amounts of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. The wood is very good with a sliver missing from the forearm and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
