Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1862 and was previously in the collection of Norm Flayderman. The "E" marking by the main serial numbers on the barrel and frame was often used to designate guns receiving special finishing or engraving. This gun was certainly finely finished, and the marking may have also been used here in place of the "L" sometimes marked on guns destined for Colt's agency in London given this revolver has been proofed in London and has a trade label marked: "THEOPS. MURCOTT,/GUN AND RIFLE MAKER,/68, HAYMARKET, S. W./LONDON/All Kinds of Ammunition" inside the case lid in addition to the Colt directions label. Brad Theophilus Murcott was a dealer and inventor and patented early breech loading designs that influenced Greener. The revolver also features a brass cone front sight, the "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" barrel address, standard cylinder scene and patent markings, and all matching serial numbers, including in the back strap mortise of the grip where the partial serial number is properly written in black ink. The case has a blank oval on the lid and contains a bore rod, lead balls, additional screws, key on a chain, Dixon & Sons powder flask, L-shaped combination tool, blued Colt patent dual cavity bullet mold, and American Flask & Cap Co. tin with caps.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 95% plus of the dark, high polish blue finish remains on the barrel and cylinder. 98% plus of the vibrant case colors remain on the frame, hammer, and loading lever. 80% plus of the original silver plating remains and displays attractive natural aged patina, and the exposed brass also displays nice aged patina. There is some minor marring of some screw-heads. The cylinder has a crisp scene, mild rotation wear, and some battered safety pins. The grip retains nearly all of the "piano" varnish and has some minor pressure marks and scratches. There is some light handling and storage related wear overall such as light rubbing of the high edges and some small scratches and dings. It remains mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has moderate age and storage related wear, some loose dividers, and some minor chips. The flask is very fine other than a dent on one side. The bullet mold and combination tool both retain 75% plus of their blue finish. The cap tin has mild wear. Overall, this is a highly attractive London retailed example of Colt's most popular percussion revolver in scarcely seen exceptional condition.
