Description:

Manufactured in 1902, this revolver features Class "B" engraving. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 4 3/4 inch barrel in .38-40 caliber, nickel finish, pearl stocks and factory engraving when shipped to Robert, Sanford & Taylor Co., Sherman, Texas, on October 18, 1902. The sides of the barrel feature floral scroll and punch dot engraving. The same pattern extends to the upper front of the frame with the addition of a zig-zag border and on the frame sides. The cylinder flats have a small wedge of scroll engraving. The top of the ejector housing has a wavy zigzag line and dot pattern, the recoil shield and loading gate have a shell pattern, zigzag and dot pattern on the butt, double line and dot pattern on the trigger guard and there is a zigzag pattern on the base of the trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address, the left side is marked "38 W.C.F." in a banner and the left side of the frame is marked with the two-line, three patent date marking in a banner followed by the circled Rampant Colt. At some time, there has been a dovetailed rifle sight on the muzzle which was then replaced with a factory style high blade sight. Fitted with checkered grips with the Mexican eagle and snake. Formerly of the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Joe Bridges in February 1956.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina, brownish on the muzzle, with some strong traces of original thinning nickel plating mostly in protected areas. The grips are very good showing little wear, light handling marks, crisp checkering and having a mellow aged patina. The markings are clear. The engraving is fading a bit on the front of the cylinder flats and on the recoil shield, otherwise it remains clear and crisp. The action is fine.
