Description:

The included copy of a factory letter indicates this revolver was one of 900 in this configuration sold to the United States Department of Labor and shipped to the district director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service at El Paso, Texas, on December 31, 1936. Another letter from George A. Tharpe indicates the revolver, West German Zeiss 6x20B binoculars, and U.S. Immigration Service Border Patrol inspector badge ("8" and "STERLING" on the back) and Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization Service identification card and badge wallet (ID not present) belonged to William H. "Bill" Jordan (1911-1997), Assistant Chief Patrol Inspector for the U.S. Border Patrol. A similarly configured prototype Border Patrol revolver from 1961 designed by Jordan and Harlon Carter and used by Jordan is part of the NRA Museums collection. Jordan served in the Border Patrol for over thirty years and was a Marine in World War II and the Korean War as well as a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan. He also wrote about gunfighting and performed fast draw exhibitions and designed the well-known Border Patrol/Jordan holster rig. In retirement, he worked with the National Rifle Association and was the editor of "Shooting Times." Also included is a signed copy of "No Second Place Winner" by Jordan and a U.S. Border Patrol patch. The items are contained within a case bound with southwestern style tooled leather. The revolver has fixed blade and notch sights, the two-line address and patent marking on top, "NEW SERVICE 38 SPECIAL" on the left side of the barrel, the Rampant Colt trademark on the left side of the frame, matching serial numbers on the frame and crane, "U.S.I.B.P." on the back strap, and lanyard loop and "0757" on the butt.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the original blue finish, moderate overall wear appropriate for a service sidearm, mostly smooth gray and brown patina where the finish is worn from handling and holster wear, and distinct markings. The replacement grips are very good and have distinct checkering and embossing, a thin crack in the top of the left grip, chip at the lower left edge, and mild overall wear. Mechanically excellent. The badge is fine and has an attractively aged patina. The wallet and badge case are good and have moderate wear appropriate to items carried/worn daily for many years. The binoculars are very good and have excellent optics and mild overall wear including some flaking of the finish. The case and book are also fine and have mild storage wear.
