Scarce World War II Inland Division Presentation M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine Serial Number 'XB66'

This is an example of a very scarce late/post World War II Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the General Motors Corp., serial number "XB66". During the later stages of WWII the General Motors Inland Div. designated a specific serial number block of M1 carbines/receivers that were intended to be used as either experimental or prototype carbines. Towards the end of the war they decided to just utilize these "X" prefix serial number blocks for Presentation Grade M1 Carbines for gifts to senior members of the military as well as executives within the General Motors Corp. It is estimated that approximately 100 of the "XB" serial numbers, were ever manufactured with only a handful of them actually ever seen for sale with any example being highly sought by advanced collectors today. These carbines were all hand built from left over/select parts and wood to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. According to the accompanying Carbine Club letter (copy), this M1 carbine was presented to William Davies of Hemphill Co. in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on August 17, 1944. During WWII, the business converted production over to focus on the manufacture of gun parts, including sights and buttplates for the M1 carbines. Their main business outside of wartime production was knitting machinery. The front receiver ring is marked "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1", and the rear of the receiver is marked "INLAND DIV/XB66" under the rear sight. This M1 Carbine has the early style, large serial number, with the barrel marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/8-44" and has a single small "P" proof in front of the barrel band. It has a late type three barrel band with the bayonet lug marked "SI" on the side. It has a late "IO" marked, round blued bolt, a stamped, adjustable rear sight, late production "PI" marked operating slide, a late production three M1 trigger housing with the sideways "INLAND" marking, and the correct "HI" marked hammer. It also has the later flip safety and "M" marked magazine catch. It is fitted with the original Inland Division M1 carbine stock marked with an "IO" proof in the sling slot and a two rivet "Q-RMC" marked walnut handguard. Usually these company Presentation Carbine do not have any U.S. Government acceptance proofs, however in this instance this wonderful example does have a left-over or reject stock that does show a faint Cross-Cannon cartouche on the right side. However these were never accepted by the U.S. Army, as they are a non-standard Presentation M1 Carbine. It has a green canvas sling. Magazine absent.

ConditionVery fine with 95% of its original parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear with finish loss on the side of the receiver from cycling/light firing with blue loss on the bolt body. The stock and handguard are both in fine condition with faint, but clear Cross-Cannon cartouche on the side with only very minor handling marks. Unfortunately, the top of the barrel (under the handguard) has been drilled and tapped (post-war) for a scope block; this alteration is not visible as it is covered by the handguard and could probably be repaired by an expert. This is a very rare and highly desirable presentation grade Inland Division M1 Carbine.
