Description:

This is an excellent example of an original I.B.M. factory presentation grade WWII M1 carbine. This rare example was presented by the I.B.M. plant #4 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. circa 1945. IBM delivered their first actual production model for testing against the Army standard in 1943 and was one of eleven U.S. Army contractors that produced approximately 346,500 Carbines for the U.S. Army by the end of WWII. This presentation grade carbine has a chrome plated metal finish and a high polish varnished walnut stock and handguard. The right side of the buttstock has a small 1 x 2 inch metal plate inset on the side that reads: "PRESENTED/BY/IBM PLANT #4/POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y." It is estimated that only a handful of these rare presentation grade M1 Carbines were ever produced and only for senior members of I.B.M. at the end of WWII. It has the standard receiver markings on top of the receiver ring and "I.B.M. CORP/3698680" stamped on the heel of the receiver under the rear sight. We cannot get the receiver plate screw to budge; however since this is an IBM presentation carbine, we anticipate it has all original IBM factory marked parts. Those we can identify are an original barrel that is marked with only "IBM CORP/10-43" with no Ordnance proofmark, a late production adjustable rear sight, type two barrel band, round blued bolt, and three piece brazed trigger housing. It is also fitted with an original low wood oval cut stock with a two rivet handguard. The stock is stamped "LW-B" in the sling slot. It has a factory chrome plated metal finish on the barrel, receiver, barrel band and trigger housing with the remainder of the parts having a deep dark blue/black type finish. Magazine absent.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus of the IBM factory chrome plating on the major components, 98% of the dark blued finish on the smaller parts, and only minor finish spotting and oxidation in some protected areas. The markings are clear and sharp, as it was probably all original parts that were just pulled form the assembly line at the end of the war. The high polish walnut stock and handguard are both in excellent condition with 98% of their varnish overall showing no visible handling marks anywhere and a solid presentation plaque in the stock. A very rare example of an IBM presentation grade M1 Carbine.
