Description:

This tunic matches the one worn by Generalleutnant Paul Klatt (1896-1973) in multiple images, including those in the accompanying book on Klatt in German by Roland Kaltenegger (see page 125 for the clearest view). A letter from Klatt's son concerning the sale of the jacket in 1989, other documents from the sale, photograph of the uniform around that time, and copies of a photograph of Klatt in the uniform (one a copy of a signed example) are also included. Klatt joined the 2nd Upper Silesian Field Artillery Regiment 57 as an officer candidate at the outbreak of WWI and was deployed to the Western Front with the 4th Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment 51. He was severely wounded and taken prisoner by the British during the war and remained in the German Army through the interwar era. When the Hitler ordered the invasion of Poland starting WWII, he was part of the invading force and also participated in the invasion of Norway. In 1941, he became the commander of the Mountain Troop Regiment 138 on the Eastern Front. That December, he was severely wounded by a landmine. On July 3, 1944, he took command of the 3rd Mountain Division. He became a Generalleutnant on January 15, 1945. He surrendered during the Prague Offensive in May 1945 and spent a decade as a convicted war criminal in Russia before being repatriated. Klatt's awards were: Iron Cross: 2nd Class (4 February 1916) and 1st Class (12 March 1920), Wound Badge in Black (30 December 1919), and Honour Cross of the World War 1914/1918 in 1934 for World War I and Iron Cross: 2nd Class (30 March 1940) and 1st Class (8 December 1940), Wound Badges: Silver (9 January 1943) and Gold (28 August 1944), Infantry Assault Badge in Silver (29 September 1944), Order of the Cross of Liberty 3rd Class with Swords (Finland, 12 December 1941), German Cross in Gold (14 April 1942), Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Knight's Cross on 4 January 1943 as Oberst and commander of Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 138, 686th Oak Leaves on 26 December 1944 as Generalleutnant and commander of 3.Gebirgs-Division in WWII. He was mentioned twice in the Wehrmachtbericht (4 October 1944 and 5 November 1944). The tunic is made of feldgrau trikot wool with red piping down the front, coordinating red backing on the generalleutnant gorget patch and shoulder straps, gold eagle and swastika on dark green backing above the right of the two pleated breast pockets, 1939 Clasp to the Iron Cross and ribbon in the second button hole from the top, slash lower pockets (lower left pocket accessible from inside as well), one internal pocket inside the left breast, turned back cuffs, dark green wool stand and fall collar with two pairs of hooks and eye closures, dark grey rayon lining, two-piece clasp buckle, brass buttons stamped "42" on the backs, and two plastic/composite buttons (one under the right shoulder strap and one under between the 2nd and 3rd buttons on the front).

Rating Definition:
