Officer Training Corps Marked British Martini Action Single Shot Rifle with Enfield Mark III Bayonet Lug

Free of maker's markings on the receiver, this is a Martini single shot rifle with a full length forearm, handguard and forearm cap assembly directly patterned after (if not taken directly from) a Mark III Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle with "205/BC" and "BRADFIELD/O.T.C" stamped on the right side of the buttstock. Established in 1908, the Officer Training Corps functioned much like the American Reserve Officer Training Corps, providing skills training to students in anticipation of joining the military upon graduation. Originally intended to solve shortfalls in officers for home units (Militia, Yeomanry, Territorial Force, etc.), World War One saw the OTC used as a recruitment ground for the regular army. The OTC was divided into the Senior Division (operating out of the universities) and the Junior Division (active in the public schools). Established in 1850 and active today as a 13-18 independent school, Bradfield College was host to a Junior Division contingent of the OTC. Though not documented, this was likely intended as a drill/training weapon, suitable for honing skills that could be transferred to the WWI-standard Enfield Mark III while making use of the otherwise obsolete stock of Martini rifles. Blade and tangent sights, a set of sling swivels, and a flat steel buttplate.

ConditionFine, with 60% of the blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, bright edge wear and scattered spotting and handling marks. The wood is also fine, showing wear and tear appropriate for active use on the training field, with a number of dents, scratches and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
