Description:

One of only an estimated 350 manufactured by Whitney Arms circa 1861 using Model 1855 Maynard Tape Primed locks which are normally dated 1858, like this example. It shows standard markings and features including the Type II folding leaf rear sight without the slide. These rifles are known to have been issued to the 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, who fought bravely in Burnside's IX Corps on the Union left flank at the Battle of Antietam, advancing further than any other regiment, and the last to be driven back. They suffered 34 killed, 139 wounded, and 21 missing, a casualty rate of over 50% of the 400 men deployed at the start of the day. Removable collection tag on the trigger guard. Includes a "US/F" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Good, showing mostly bright finish with some scattered light pitting and patches of grey/brown patina. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood has minor handling marks throughout and some minor chipping mainly along the ramrod channel. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine showing a mix of bright and grey patina with some light pitting.
