Description:

This is an early "Type III" musket (1808-1814) that is dated "1810" at the tail of the lock and has mostly the standard markings and features, with the exception of the barrel whish is 42 inches in length and built for the U.S. Navy. The side plate is brass instead of iron, and the comb is not fluted. "J B" is carved into the left flat. The bayonet is marked "I" on the base of the blade (does not fit properly). Pre-War of 1812 Model 1795s are always desirable. Around 45,000-50,000 of these Type III muskets were manufactured. The Model 1795 was the first official U.S. manufactured infantry weapon and was essentially a copy of the French "Charleville" muskets imported and used in the American Revolution. They served as the main martial arms in our second fight against Great Britain and their Native American allies in the War of 1812.

Rating Definition:

Good with light patina on the polished metal, some mild pitting, some faded markings, refinished stock, repaired crack on the right side of the forend between the lock and rear barrel band, repairs around the barrel tang, some chips, and general small scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine.
