Description:

This Colt Model 1862 Police revolver was manufactured c. 1867 with London proof marks. The revolver is complete with a British case and accessories. The revolver has the rarely encountered steel trigger guard and back strap with Colt London blue finish. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur and the recoil shield does not have a capping cutout. The barrel has a brass cone front sight. The barrel, five-shot fluted cylinder, trigger guard and back strap have the extra high polish blue finish frequently seen on revolvers sold through the Colt London agency. The loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened with vivid case colors. The trigger and screws have a niter blue finish. The one-piece grip is straight grain American walnut with a varnished, piano, finish. London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel and in each chamber flute. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. "36 CAL" is roll-stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and back strap with "L" stamped above or below the serial number. There is no serial number on the exposed portions of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The British case is oak with brass reinforcing screws in the top of and a round brass inscription plate. The case interior is lined with green baize and has six compartments including one with a lid. The case contains: (1) blued steel cleaning rod, (2) L-shaped combination screw-driver/nipple wrench, (3) blued, iron, dual cavity bullet mold with straight handles marked "COLTS/PATENT" on the top of the sprue cutter and "36P" on the right block, (4) unopened, 500 count, tin of Ely percussion caps with green label and black lacquer finish, (5) un-marked pewter oil bottle and (6) bag-shaped powder flask with adjustable charger, lanyard ring, brown lacquer body, gold-plated top and charger, marked: "JAMES DIXON/& SONS/SHEFFIELD".

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver, case and accessories all remain in excellent condition and show minimal storage and handling wear. The revolver barrel retains 98% plus original high polish London blue finish; the only significant wear is a small spot of flaking behind the wedge slot and several dis-assembly dents around the edge of the slot. The cylinder retains 95% plus high polish blue finish with some minor edge wear and flaking in one flute. The cylinder safety pins are slightly flattened. There is no flash pitting on the percussion nipples or front and rear face of the cylinder. The steel trigger guard and back strap have 98% plus blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain 98% of the vivid case colors. The trigger and screws have 95% of the fire blue finish. The walnut grip remains in nearly new condition with 98% of the piano finish. The Colt factory markings and London proof marks are crisp. The exterior of the oak case is in very good overall condition with scattered minor handling marks. The green baize interior is in excellent condition. The Colt instruction label in the top of the lid has yellowed but remains in excellent condition. The case lining is clean, bright and free from tears, compression marks or oil stains. The accessories remain in excellent overall condition. The steel cleaning rod retains nearly all of the blue finish. 80% of the dull blue finish remains on the nipple wrench/screwdriver. The bullet mold retains 85% of the blue finish with sharp marking; wear is limited to scattered dents and small spots of age discoloration. The cap tin is in excellent plus condition with a near perfect paper label and 95% of the lacquer finish. The pewter oil bottle is excellent. The Dixon powder flask is in exceptional condition; the bag-shaped body is free from dents and retains 98% of the brown lacquer finish. The brass top and charger has 95% of the gold-plated finish and nearly all of the fire blue finish is present on the charger spring. The Dixon markings are sharp. This is a truly magnificent example of a London proofed, Colt Model 1862 Police revolver with excellent British case and accessories.
